Anna looked at the black stallion, Fleetwater REC, and his rider Elias during their warm up for the dressage phase of the Falsterbo Eventing Trials. He was very tense and jumped for all the loud noises from the show jumping arena a few meters away. It was pretty normal for Fleetwater to be tense during dressage, he just didn’t find it as fun as the cross country phase. Normally he would still show of the movements without faults, but during his latest shows he had just been struggling and made a lot of faults causing them to lose a lot of points.
Anna had Fleetwater being checked out by a vet at the beginning of the month to make sure there was nothing wrong with him, and he had been given a clean bill of health during that check. So the only thing Anna could think of was that the old stallion has just had enough of competitions. Together with the others in the team, including Fleetwater’s rider, they decided that no matter what he would be retired after this show. He was 19 years old after all.
Elias and Fleetwater rode up to join Anna by the fence to the warm up arena. “How is he feeling today?” Anna asked.
“Pretty much the same as the last show, he is very tense”, Elias answered.
“Just try not to push him too much then, if he doesn’t wanna do it, then just break it up and leave the arena”, Anna said while they walked over to the competition arena to start their dressage test.
Fleetwater did calm down when they entered the arena, even if he was still tense he still wanted to perform, it was almost like he knew that this was his last competition and that he would just spend the rest of his days in the pasture and just do whatever he wanted after this. Both the cross country and show jumping went okay for him, he did knock down 2 poles in the jumping but other than that they had a solid competition, even if he didn’t place.
