Ponies heading towards the flat racing (?)
Yep, the pony nerd is here again!
This time I am looking into getting some pony breeds added to Flat Racing. I know RL they have their own discipline, but to me that doesn’t feel realistic to add to Equus at this point. Plus the Flat racing could use a little boost So this is based out of information I can find in Sweden, if anyone has information from other countries, feel free to fill in
First off, the official swedish racing association in Sweden is called “Svensk Galopp”, here is a link to their website: https://www.svenskgalopp.se/ (in swedish sadly)
Now what we wanna focus on is the pony racing section, which you can find here: https://www.svenskgalopp.se/artikel/du_som_tavlar_ponnygalopp?defaultMenuId=true
As well as a link to the official rulebook (yes this is also in Swedish, which is why i will provide a translation of the things that would be important-ish for Equus): https://www.svenskgalopp.se/polopoly_fs/1.601971!/menu/standard/file/ponnyrg2017.pdf
From Chapter 3 in the rulebook (3 Kap)
1§ For a pony to compete in official races they need to be registered with the Swedish Racing association (Svensk Galopp) or other foreign racing association. The pony and the trainer needs to have a legit license from Svensk Galopp.
27§ A pony needs to be registered with it’s proper breed association before it can be accepted into Svensk Galopp.
The rulebook doesn’t mention any breeds allowed or not allowed, however I did some research on my own.
I found some start/results lists from this year: https://www.svenskgalopp.se/artikel/tavlingar_2018?defaultMenuId=true
I looked over the ponies who entered the race and searched for them on the official pony registry in Sweden to see if I could find information about their breeds. And I found the following breeds from this race;
Sjöbrisens Bajonett- Shetland Pony http://www.blabasen.se/sh/SokHast?a=visa_hast&id=353122
Marion Of Sten- Welsh mountain http://www.blabasen.se/sh/SokHast?a=visa_hast&id=236894
Moritz v Tobbenhof- Shetland Pony http://www.blabasen.se/sh/SokHast?a=visa_hast&id=348137
Joyce Pride- Swedish Riding Pony http://www.blabasen.se/sh/SokHast?a=visa_hast&id=178273
Tiger JSA- Gotland Pony http://www.blabasen.se/sh/SokHast?a=visa_hast&id=139003
Västergårds Hidalgo- Swedish Riding Pony http://www.blabasen.se/sh/SokHast?a=visa_hast&id=175075
Elinas Casper- Gotland Pony http://www.blabasen.se/sh/SokHast?a=visa_hast&id=139797
Pictures from the race: https://svenskgalopp.smugmug.com/Ponnygalopp/Ponnygalopp-Jagersro-180429/
As well as some more breed research:
Power Nova- Swedish Riding Pony http://www.blabasen.se/sh/SokHast?a=visa_hast&id=178457
Filippas- Grade Pony (50% arabian) http://www.blabasen.se/sh/SokHast?a=visa_hast&id=438398
Almnäs Macarena- Shetland Pony http://www.blabasen.se/sh/SokHast?a=visa_hast&id=330950
Fredriksdals Vanda- Swedish Riding Pony http://www.blabasen.se/sh/SokHast?a=visa_hast&id=174877
Bokhaga Ikaros- Welsh Pony http://www.blabasen.se/sh/SokHast?a=visa_hast&id=216056
So as for breeds being added I would suggest the ones mentioned above:
- Shetland Pony
- Welsh Mountain
- Swedish Riding Pony
- Gotland Pony
- Welsh Pony (I assume section B, since the other sections could be a bit heavy for flat racing)
Examples of other countries with official pony racing:
- UK- https://www.ponyracingauthority.co.uk/ and their regulations http://www.ponyracingauthority.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/PRA-Regulations-Text-2018.pdf
- This is results from the scandinavian championship in pony Flat racing in 2008 (yes I know it’s 10 years ago, but with some research there has been championships after this one too https://www.svenskgalopp.se/artikel?cid=2.3794&article=1.324543&defaultMenuId=true
The article mentions that Norway and Denmark participated, and it was held by Svensk Galopp. And as mentioned above, ponies racing in those races needs to be registered with an official racing organization/association. This means Denmark and Norway also has official pony racing associations.
- Switzerland- Regulations: https://www.iena.ch/fileadmin/user_upload/Documents/Galop-Suisse/Courses-poneys/Reglements/a_Reglement_Ponygalopprennen_2018.pdf
I see no reason not to allow Shetlands, Gotland Ponies, Welsh A and B, and Swedish Riding Ponies into flat racing, as well as Grade and International Sport Ponies depending on their breed makeup. I agree realistically we should expand Pony Racing into it's own discipline, but given the small size of the current Flat Racing discipline, I believe it makes more sense to combine the two for now, and will leave the decision to potentially separate them in the future to the Competition Committee.
Will leave this open for a few days so other people can voice any concerns and offer more breed evidence- but otherwise I will change their caps so they can race starting in October Thank you for all your research!
@Maria-Jones did some research into pony racing and found that Switzerland also has official pony racing. I have added the regulation documents to the main post
I would love to support your proposal. A few months ago I uploaded a Gotland template and I think that admitting them in races could cause some breeders to be encouraged to raise them (me, for example).
I'm looking for information on ponies racing in Spain (however small). There is nothing official, it is only done as events within larger events.
For example, this year the La Zarzuela racecourse organized a ponies race.
(in spanish, sorry )
"... the Championship of Ponies, a racing tournament for children in which twelve horses of Category A will participate with their respective riders, who will travel approximately 200 meters on the grass track.
This tournament will be held in four races in spring and four in autumn, always after the last race of the thoroughbred day (about 14:45 h.), And the closing of the Championship will be at Madrid Horse Week, at the end of November. In this first test there will be twelve participants among which you will be able to see spectacular ponies from the stables: Il Padrino, Agrado, Yeguada Rocío, Yeguada Torreduero, and Kings College
Accepted The following pony breeds may now enter flat racing:
-Welsh Mountain Pony (Section A)
-Welsh Pony (Section B )
-British Sport and Riding Ponies
-Swedish Riding Ponies
-Grade (Pony) and International Sport Ponies, if their breed percentage is realistic for racing (will vary vase by case)
Thank you all! Any other pony breeds will need their own post to get caps in flat racing.
