I'm a little confused on what equitation is. Is it similar to working equitation or different? Would you be able to provide some references as to what equitation is? I tried looking it up, but I got mainly working equitation for results.

@Sadie-Woodson I believe Equitation (US rules) judges solely the rider and not the horse. Totally different to UK rules which makes the disciplines confusing for me lol

I already googled it and read a bit about it, but I'm not sure what kind of tack to use. A western saddle and bridle, or..? And what about the rider's attire? Also, what could be a good secondary discipline? Thanks in advance

Mountain Trail is usually done in western tack, but any tack and attire is fine- the competition aspect is more based on how well you and your horse navigate obstacles. Here is the website for the International Mountain Trail Challenge Association which has information on rules and turnout. The equipment examples pdf has information with photos about what tack is allowed, and here is their official rules pdf. As for a secondary discipline, Mountain Trail pairs extremely well with a wide variety of disciplines. Here are all the disciplines which it has the lowest penalties for:
